Colossus - Wake - Album Review

Colossus is an Progressive Sludge/Stoner/Post-Metal Band from Stockholm, Sweden

The members are:

Niklas Eriksson - Guitar & Vocals
Peter Berg - Bass
Thomas Norstedt - Drums

Colossus are a a band that I have featured before earlier this year and in 2011 when I said they were a band definitely to look out for when I first started the blog.

Fast Forward 2 years and Colossus have finally delivered their brilliant and hard-hitting debut album - WAKE. Colossus are mainly a Progressive Sludge Metal band but they add extra layers of awesome Stoner  Metal and Post-Metal riffs to stand out from the crowd. Plus they are from Sweden. So you know it's going to be fucking great.

Wake is full of action-packed riffs that will have you begging for more thought out the album's epic 59 minute running time. If you're into Kyuss, Tool, Neurosis and Mastodon then your going to be in your element here. Colossus have harnessed the energy of those legendary bands and have made it their own. Elements of Sludge, Stoner, Doom, Post-Metal and Hard Rock have been mixed together to take you on an unforgettable journey of heavy pounding riffs.

First track - A Stir From Slumber - does just that. It awakens the lost spirit in your body with a brutal rallying war-cry from Niklas. He is backed up some mean heavy as fuck Sludge/Stoner Metal riffs. This is a brilliant track to start the album off with. And it this is just the start. The album has 8 more excellent tracks to impress you with.

Up next is Traitors Gate which starts off with a cool soothing guitar riff before descending into chaos. This is one of my fave tracks on the album as it is played at an unbelievable fast pace before settling into a cool as fuck rhythm that will have you shouting along with Niklas at the top of your lungs.

Reflections Of The Arcane and Ruinbuilder - carry Wake on to another level. You can hear the intensity and pain in Niklas vocals on these two tracks. Proving that Colossus know how to write sublime lyrics that pack an almighty punch.

Up next is probably the one of the albums standout tracks - Pillars of Perennity - which features Lars G Petrov from Entombed. It has a brilliant edge that could of easily came from the legendary Gothenburg Melodic Death Metal scene. But still maintaining Colossus own identity.

I am not going to do a song-by-song review as there are too many great moments to mentions and one I feel you should discover for yourself. Colossus have proven their are a band forging their own identity within the Swedish Metal Scene and quite possibly the global metal scene.

Colossus do end the album with an amazing 11 minute epic that will make you think what the hell did I just listen to. Fungle Garden even has layers of Fuzz Rock to match the crazy Sludge/Stoner/Post-Metal carnage going on. The lyrics might be from another realm but it gives the song a brilliant psychedelic edge that will leave you in an emotional state like it did myself.

It may have taken Colossus two years to release their debut album after they originally contacted me, but what a debut album to announce your arrival to the world.

Wake is an album that Colossus should rightly be proud of. Wake has the potential to launch Colossus onto bigger and better things. I could see them performing at some of the world's most famous metal festivals over the next few years or so. That's how much I rate this album.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Wake will be released on April 20th 2013 from all good stockists everywhere. Buy a copy when it comes out. You won't be sorry. Thanks to the band for sending me a copy to review.
